LAUREN LUNA

FINE ART PAINTER

Behind the Canvas

Lauren Luna is a Houston-based visual artist and educator whose work lives at the intersection of place, memory, and storytelling. Originally from Columbus, Ohio, she earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Painting from Kent State University before moving to New York City, where she taught Special Education in the NYC public school system while completing a Master’s degree at Manhattan College. She later returned to Ohio with her son and earned a second Master’s degree in Fine Arts from the Academy of Art University.

In 2011, Luna relocated to Houston to fully commit to her professional art career. Her mixed-media practice—best known for layered cityscapes, architectural references, and culturally resonant narratives—draws inspiration from Houston’s neighborhoods, history, and everyday life. By embedding vintage maps, blueprints, newspapers, and ephemera beneath expressive paint layers, her work becomes both contemporary and archival, capturing what it means to feel rooted in a place.

Luna’s work gained regional and national recognition in 2015 when she was awarded Best in Show at a juried art competition, leading to formal commendation by the Alvin Independent School District School Board and recognition in the Congressional Record by her district’s State Representative. Her impact was further acknowledged through a mayoral proclamation declaring July 11th as “Lauren Luna Day.” Her public art includes a permanent mural installation at the George R. Brown Convention Center, along with murals and commissions throughout the greater Houston area. She regularly exhibits at major art festivals and cultural venues and is also known for her immersive live-painting experiences at corporate events, weddings, and community celebrations

.

Parallel to her studio practice, Luna has dedicated over 23 years to education, including 14 years as an art educator, serving thousands of students across diverse learning environments. Her background spans Special Education, bilingual education, and working with students with emotional and behavioral needs. Today, she intentionally bridges her professional art practice with the classroom—introducing students to creative careers, cultural identity, and visual literacy through real-world examples. In 2025, she was honored as Teacher of the Year at her campus, a rare distinction for an art educator.

Luna is also the Co-Founder of the D.R.E.A.M Affect Foundation, a nonprofit organization that provides scholarships for minority students pursuing Fine Arts degrees and grants for emerging artists. In September 2024, she received the Professional Achievement Award from Kent State University, recognizing her contributions to the arts, education, and community leadership.
